Laymen's Introduction
of Blockchain and Digital Currency
|
|
Overview
|
A blockchain is described in Wikipedia as a decentralized,
distributed and oftentimes public, digital ledger that is used
to record transactions across many computers so that any involved
record cannot be altered retroactively, without the alteration
of all subsequent blocks.
Blockchains are often related to cryptocurrencies. A cryptocurrency
is described as a digital asset designed to work as a medium of
exchange that uses strong cryptography to secure financial transactions,
control the creation of additional units, and verify the transfer
of assets. Such a description of the blockchain contains many
technical terminologies that may be hard to understand. What exactly
then are blockchain and cryptocurrency? Can they be understood
without the technological background?
In late-October, President Xi Jinping of China announced support
for the development of blockchain after a Politburo study session.
His announcement for support of blockchain is enough to drive
the stocks of almost 200 blockchain-investing companies to surge.
In order to further accelerate the innovation of blockchain applications,
the Chinese government has also announced a Central Bank digital
currency called DCEP which allows the Central Bank to retain control
of the money supply and monitor and regulate capital distribution.
What message is China trying to send to the world with all these
initiatives?

All sessions are conducted by a professional and experienced
speaker
Professor Keith C.C. Chan
Prof. Chan has over 35 years of experience working in Artificial
Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Data Analytics
(DA). He began researching into AI and ML during the second
AI wave in the eighties and has been publishing in these areas
since then. Over the years, he has authored and co-authored
over 250 research publications in academic journals and conference
proceedings.
He has developed many effective algorithms in ML and DA using
such computational intelligent techniques as fuzzy logic,
evolutionary computation and artificial neural networks and
have applied them effectively to solve different problems
in business and finance, healthcare, medical care and drug
development.
Prof. Chan serves on the program committees of over 20 conferences
in AI and Bioinformatics every year. He graduated with a B.Math.
degree in Computer Science and Statistics and a M.A.Sc. and
Ph.D. degree in Systems Design Engineering from the University
of Waterloo in Canada in 1984, 1985 and 1989 respectively.
Soon after graduation, he joined the IBM Canada Laboratory
as a software analyst before he returned to the academia to
join first the Ryerson University in Toronto in 1993 and then
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1994 where he worked
at the Department of Computing until 2019. During the period
from 2002 to 2008, he was Head of his department.
Mr. Patrick Cheung
Patrick Cheung graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University
with a first class honors in Computing and has over 18 years
of experience as a software developer and manager. He has
also served the roles of software analyst and software architect.
For the last several years, he has been investigating into
blockchain and cryptocurrency and is very familiar with the
technologies behind them.
Patrick has extensive experience in J2EE, Webservice, Ajax,
software quality management, software process improvement,
etc.
